NHL
Created in Montreal in 1917, the National Hockey League consists of 30 franchised professional hockey teams, 6 of which are Canadian the other 24 are located in the United States. The league nearly collapsed in 1918 when the Montreal Arena, aka Westmount Arena burnt to the ground forcing the Montreal Wanderers to cease operations and the Canadiens to hastily rebuild another arena.
The Toronto Blueshirts won the first league title.

In 1924, two new teams were added to the NHL, including the Boston Bruins, the leagues first American team. Expansion and contraction of the NHL continued until 1942. After that 6 teams remained. Known as the “original 6” the Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers and the Toronto Maple Leafs were the only teams in the NHL for 25 years.
Under pressure to get a network TV contract in the US and with the Western Hockey League threatening to take over, the NHL once again began expanding. It doubled in size for the 67-68 season acquiring such team as the Pittsburg Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers and LA Kings. By 1974 the NHL consisted of 18 teams.
While always popular, the NHL has the smallest fan base of all 4 major sports leagues, NBA, MLB, NFL and NHL. Following the 2004-2005 season lockout, the NHL received record attendance turnout with the Montreal Canadiens, Calgary Flames, Colorada Avalanche, Minnesota Wild and Vancouver Canucks selling out ALL of their home games in the 2005-2006 season.
